Kevin Kiermaier on Rays’ recent moves: ‘I am 100 percent frustrated and very upset’

Kevin Kiermaier on Monday sounded off on the Tampa Bay Rays’ recent roster moves, saying he is 100 percent frustrated and very upset by the team’s decisions to part ways with All-Star outfielder Corey Dickerson and veteran pitcher Jake Odorizzi.

It’s hard to worry too much, though. Obvious QB questions aside, the Mountaineers return a ton elsewhere on the depth chart. Star running back Jalin Moore is back, and a receiving corps that had to lean heavily on freshmen last year (and survived doing so) now gets to lean on sophomores. All-conference left tackle Victor Johnson is back, and while there are a few pieces to replace in the defensive front seven, the secondary is loaded.

There’s more turnover here than what fellow SBC heavyweights Troy and Arkansas State are dealing with, so maybe the Mountaineers merely go 6-2 or so in conference this year. But that’s still a long leap from 5-14.

With Lamb behind center, Appalachian State formed a reliable identity. The Mountaineers were going to run first and run second, and in the few instances per game in which Lamb was asked to make a play, he’d do so. He was a terrific scrambler, and he completed between 60 and 61 percent of his passes each year as a starter.

The formula obviously worked. But in 2017, we saw both a better and more volatile version of the App State attack. Volatility tends to be a product of massive turnover in the receiving corps.

This year I did three things differently, Cespedes said through a translator Monday following the team’s first full workout. I ran. Then I did weightlifting, but not so much heavy weights. And then I did yoga trying to get ready for this.

A two-time All-Star, Cespedes signed a $110 million, four-year contract before the 2017 season and bulked up in the weight room. He wound up on the disabled list with a left hamstring strain from April 28 until June 10 and then with a right hamstring strain from Aug. 26 through the end of the season. Cespedes hit .292 with 17 homers and 42 RBIs in 81 games.

With yoga, my muscles are more flexible right now, he said. I used to work out with heavy weightlifting. I had strength, but I wasn’t flexible. Now I’m flexible because of the yoga. … The yoga has been working for me. When I showed up in the last couple of seasons down here, the lower back of my body was very tight. I haven’t felt that yet.bears_019

The New England Patriots and the Philadelphia Eagles are set to face off in Super Bowl 52.

Plenty of Eagles and Patriots fans will be scouring the Internet for Super Bowl tickets to the see their squad, hopefully, pull out a victory and hoist the Lombardi trophy.

With it being the most widely viewed sporting event in most years, Super Bowl tickets don’t come cheap. Currently, the cheapest you can find is roughly $3,400 on SeatGeek with the next-cheapest within $200; NFL Ticket Exchange’s lowest ticket price was $4,290 on Jan. 23.

Brady’s healthy eating habits are well-documented. His tactics for sustained athletic optimism are no secret. The only significant injury that has disrupted his career was the ACL tear that scratched his 2008 season. But torn ligaments and the occasional Oreo won’t affect Brady later in life like a knockout, helmet-to-helmet cheap shot could.

The more science teaches us about traumatic brain injury, it seems, the less former football players can guarantee a fully-functional mind in their elder years. Simply put: The longer Brady plays, the more he risks his future well-being.

The Eagles saw 6-3, 224-pound Terrell Owens make a remarkable return from a broken leg and torn ankle ligament to play well in Super Bowl 39, catching 9 passes for 122 yards against the Patriots. The Eagles are hoping to see 6-3, 218-pound Alshon Jeffery also finish his first season in Philly with a bang after catching 9 passes for 146 yards and two TDs so far in the playoffs.

The Eagles saw Brian Westbrook become a matchup nightmare for the Patriots in Super Bowl 39, turning 22 touches into 104 scrimmage yards and a TD. The Eagles are hoping to see Jay Ajayi keep living up to Westbrook’s old number after racking up 39 touches for 197 scrimmage yardage so far in the playoffs.

The Patriots have a habit of taking one key opposing offensive player out of the game. Just like with Owens and Westbrook, it will be difficult for New England to keep both Jeffery and Ajayi from having a major impact in Super Bowl 52.

Joe McKnight murder trial under way

The trial of Ronald Gasser, the man accused of killing former NFL running back Joe McKnight in a December 2016 road-rage incident, began Tuesday in New Orleans as potential jurors were questioned, reported.

Gasser, 56, is facing second-degree murder charges after he allegedly shot McKnight three times with a .40-caliber semi-automatic handgun in the Terrytown suburb of New Orleans. If convicted under the charge, Gasser would face a mandatory life sentence.

The Falcons are better equipped to hold leads and make game-changing sacks and takeaways than they were a year ago.

Matt Ryan dropped off from his MVP campaign. His numbers and efficiency in the first year after Shanahan resembled his struggles in the first year with Shanahan, in 2015. His 20 TD passes were a career-low for a non-rookie season.

“This is a unique year,” says ESPN analyst Fran Fraschilla, who’s been covering the Big 12 since 2004. “At this point in time, I don’t think there’s a legitimate Final Four team, but what we have in this league from one to 10 is easily the most competitive, balanced grouping that I think I’ve seen probably since the league was formed in 1996.”

Shooting film is an often thankless job, and I always feel a little mean when I laugh at their misfortune — but this moment was sublime because not only did the cameraman fall, but he was SCREAMING the entire time like his life flashed before his eyes.

The only thing that could remotely make this better is if we had footage from that camera, and CBS HAD US COVERED!

And it’s even better in still form!

This is the most beautiful thing to happen in an otherwise ugly game. It’s poetry. It’s life. It’s perfection. Forget this game, this moment will be one of the greatest in football this season.

Bless you, Bills vs. Jaguars. Bless you, Bortles. Bless you, screaming cameraman.patriots_009_aaab70a52054958a-180x180

The Steelers will have an extra week to get Antonio Brown healthy for the playoffs.

Pittsburgh earned a first-round bye in the postseason with a 34-6 win over the Texans on Monday at Houston’s NRG Stadium.

It was a complete win for the Steelers (12-3), who got big games from quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, running back Le’Veon Bell, receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster, cornerback Mike Hilton and defensive end Cam Heyward.

Roethlisberger went 20 of 29 for 226 yards, completing five passes to Bell for 28 yards and six to Smith-Schuster for 75 yards and a touchdown. Bell also ran for 69 yards on 14 carries and scored on a 10-yard run in the third quarter.

Hilton and Heyward led a stellar defensive effort as the Texans (4-11) were held to 227 yards of offense. Heyward had four tackles, two for loss, and a pair of sacks. Hilton, a first-year player from Ole Miss who had one career sack, forced a fumble and recorded a trio of sacks on Monday as the Steelers defense dropped Houston quarterbacks T.J. Yates and Taylor Heinicke a total of seven times.

Chicago answered right back with two quick goals.

“Goals are going to happen. You just have to find ways to make the saves at important times,” Smith said. “Big goal by (Giordano) in overtime there and we go into the new year feeling good about ourselves.”

The Flames took a 3-0 lead 1:05 seconds later with Gaudreau again orchestrating the setup, this time to Monahan in front, who snapped his nine-game goalless drought.

Joe Young scored a career-high 20 points off the bench and Bojan Bogdanovic scored all of his 13 points in the third quarter as the Pacers (19-18) dropped their fourth straight, equaling their worst skid of the season. Indiana also lost four in a row in early November.

This time, the Pacers have been without guard Victor Oladipo, who averages a team-leading 24.9 points per game. He missed a third straight game with an injured right knee.

Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield, two other Sooners top AP All-Americans

No. 2 Oklahoma will bring three All-Americans to the College Football Playoff.

Quarterback Baker Mayfield, offensive tackle Orlando Brown and tight end Mark Andrews of Oklahoma were selected to the Associated Press All-America team, giving the Sooners more players on the first team than any school. The All-America team, which dates to 1925 and was selected this season by a panel of 17 Top 25 voters, was released Monday.

Wisconsin placed five players on the three teams, led by linebacker T.J. Edwards on the first team. Running back Jonathan Taylor and tight Troy Fumagalli made the second team and offensive linemen David Edwards and Beau Benzschawel made the third team.

Oklahoma had four picks overall with linebacker Ogbonnia Okoronkwo making the second team. Mayfield jumped from third team to first team. He was selected to the second team in 2015.

The Big Ten had the most All-Americans with seven, followed by the Big 12 with six and the Pac-12 and SEC with three apiece.

White, an NFL prospect, has had to carry the offensive load. The Hilltoppers have not been able run the football and struggled in pass protection.

Western Kentucky is last in the nation in rushing offense, averaging just 66.1 yards on the ground per game. The Hilltoppers also have allowed 42 sacks this season, the second-most of any bowl team. Only Washington State (44) has surrendered more sacks out of teams that reached bowls.

I would like to issue an apology to Josh McCown. Before the season, I said the only job he should have at age 38 is as a backup for a good team, and that he had no business starting. That was wrong: He has completed more than 67% of his passes for 17 touchdowns (both career bests) while throwing eight interceptions in 11 games. That’s totally serviceable! I’d take McCown over Joe Flacco any day.

Manning said the team’s execution must be better.

It took longer than three months for Elliott to begin his suspension, which isn’t nearly as long as Deflategate lasted. There’s clearly a big difference between domestic violence and deflating footballs, but both dealt with labor law matters.

“We’re grateful for the immediate response by stadium security personnel to the situation,” the team said in a statement. “The Jacksonville Jaguars and our stadium partners are firmly committed to creating a safe and enjoyable experience for all who visit EverBank Field, including fans and members of the visiting team. It is unfortunate that the actions of a few would tarnish the reputation of the Jaguars fan base and the positive, electric game day atmosphere at yesterday’s game.”

“The defense is playing well, keeping us in games and especially some second half of games. We just haven’t been able to move the ball, not been able to get first downs, not being able to get completion and it’s frustrating,” Manning said (via the New York Daily News). “It’s not the style of football I’m used to playing. Not being able to complete the ball, so yeah it’s frustrating.

“We were talking about the style not being efficient, not being explosive. But it is a different style and it is a little bit more run, run and then throw it on third down. So yeah it’s different, but hey, it can be effective, it can work…we still got to do our part and finish that job and convert on those third downs.”

The Giants (2-9) are averaging only 15.6 points per game this season, ahead of only the Browns (15.0) at the bottom of the NFL scoring column. panthers_043

It’s never too early to think about the 2018 NFL draft — especially if you’re a fan of one of the teams at the bottom of the standings.

Well, if the science backs Billups’ claim that marijuana is a stress reliever and then improves players’ performance and focus, then that would open up a whole different discussion between the and the Players Association on the pot policy. You say it’s impossible for a backup quarterback with two starts under his belt to take the next step, but Garoppolo isn’t your typical second-stringer.If one or both are on the board and they blow this pick on Brockers, Ingram or some other flavor of the month that is not a high priority, and defensive tackle is not a high priority, then the whole front office should be fired.Ravens quarterback Schaub continues to struggle with interceptions returned for touchdowns, adding another pick-six to his career totals ‘s game against the Miami Dolphins.Their paths crossed directly for the last time when they were introduced before the 1999 All- Game at Fenway Park as two of the 100 greatest baseball players of the 20th century.Berube is set to be a restricted free agent, RFA, after this .The DVVA team was three players short.

“Everything happens for a reason,” Gabbert told reporters this week. “I’m a firm believer in that, and it didn’t work out there. There were things in my control, some things out of my control, but for whatever reason, it just didn’t work. I wouldn’t change it at all. I learned a lot, met a lot of great people there.”

His matchup against the Jacksonville defense may not go as smoothly as his solid showing against the Texans in Week 11, though. The Jaguars are 7-3 on the back of a dominant defense that is No. 1 in the NFL in points allowed, yards allowed, passing yards allowed, and turnovers forced.

The team has won four straight in spite of Bortles — a fourth-year quarterback who has been turnover prone throughout his career and looks like a long shot to be the Jaguars’ starter in 2018.orioles_021

In a big win, Zuerlein was the only player to get a game ball from McVay.

In a perfect world, admitted Newmark, Roush will get him back under their roof sooner rather than later. “There’s a combination of factors that will go into that,” he said. “Ideally, we’ll have him in one of our cars in the next few years, but I think the focus right now is we got to get him running better in the 34.” Under NASCAR’s new ownership rules of only being able to run four full-time cars, plus the addition of the Charter System this year, Roush has been in a box.

Neither move has borne much fruit. Hoyer posted his worst passer rating in five years before being benched after six games, and Beathard has subsequently been worse. Only the Bears and Browns have fielded passers with a cumulative Total QBR worse than San Francisco’s 28.4 mark this season.

Another week, another impressive display for the Grizzlies, who are showing few signs of coming back to Earth. They’re doing it in classic Grizzlies fashion — elite defense coupled with a passable offense predicated on the Conley-Gasol combo.

Stephen Hauschka, kicker, Buffalo. He’s tried seven field goals in the past two games—from 49, 55, 53, 27, 24, 56 and 55 yards—and made them all. The last three came in the upset of the Falcons on Sunday.

Greg Zuerlein, kicker, Los Angeles Rams. He kicked seven field goals (from 49, 44, 44, 30, 28, 43 and 33 yards) and finished with 23 of the Rams’ 35 points in a dramatic win at Dallas. “Mr Automatic!” coach Sean McVay called him.

I can’t remember a time when there were so many teams trotting out such bad groups of receivers. Since, as friend of the show Rainbow Cave points out, it’s a week short on big-time games, and because I’m the kind of guy who lays on the horn at the Taco Bell drive-through if my order takes longer than 40 seconds, let’s all be impatient jerks and peek ahead to what should be a fascinating market for passing-game weapons this offseason.

He finished with 286 yards and four touchdowns and, for now, calmed the Dump Dalton movement in Cincinnati.

In a statement, Henderson said that it was his duty to determine if Goodell was “arbitrary and capricious” in his decision to suspend Elliott, but it was not his duty to “second guess his decision.”

“[Goodell] is entitled to deference on those judgments absent irregularities not present here. While the record contains inconsistencies in statements, an adjudicator makes informed judgments on the credibility of witnesses and evidence,” Henderson said.

Andy Dalton, quarterback, Cincinnati. I thought he permanently had “embattled” as a mandatory adjective in front of his name, or maybe had his name changed legally to Embattled Andy Dalton. He did something about that Sunday in the Bengals’ 31-7 rout of the Browns, completing 17 of his first 18 passes, for three touchdowns and 215 yards.

Goodwin has obviously has the worse luck, as the high-value targets have been there, which makes him a better bet to bounce back in the second half. Garcon, meanwhile, has never eclipsed six touchdowns in a season and is a poor bet for any more than two or three scores in the second half.

Another round in an endless cycle of history-making for LeBron James. The four-time MVP will almost certainly become the youngest player to reach 30,000 points during his age-33 season, eclipsing Lakers legend Kobe Bryant (34 years, 104 days). He needs just 1,213 points to hit the threshold and has easily surpassed that total during each of his 14 seasons. James also has a good shot at becoming the 11th player (and first forward) to reach 8,000 career assists.

New blood on Christmas. The league office decided to bet big on two up-and-comers for its annual holiday quintuple-header, adding Philadelphia and Minnesota to the mix this season. This year will potentially mark Christmas Day debuts for four No. 1 picks and a No. 3 pick: Ben Simmons, Markelle Fultz, Karl-Anthony Towns, Andrew Wiggins and Joel Embiid.
