With an eye towards rebuilding (again) next season, Browns coach Hue Jackson told reporters Monday that Cleveland is indeed interested in drafting another quarterback despite starting 2017 second-round pick DeShone Kizer for the majority of the winless campaign.
“It’s not a good problem because that means you’re losing, but it’s a problem that in this situation, you want to have,” Jackson said about having high draft picks. “We can’t have too many good quarterbacks right now on this football team.
“We have to and we’ve said it before, use resources at that position and go get the right guy that we feel comfortable with to pair them with some of the players we have here to come up with the best quarterback for the Cleveland Browns. That is just what you do.”
The top five draft-eligible quarterbacks are UCLA’s Josh Rosen, USC’s Sam Darnold, reigning Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Jackson, Wyoming’s Josh Allen and Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield.
“This is foot…ball, if you want to see flag football then let’s take our pads off, that’ll make it easier for me cause then I don’t have to wear heavy s—,” he said. “But then give me flags for us to pull off because then I know what we’re playing.”
Mitchell has been fined several times for hits in his career, but the source of his anger stems from the fines and suspensions from Monday night’s matchup with the Bengals. Steelers wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster was suspended for his hit on Vontaze Burfict, and Bengals safety George Iloka was fined for his hit on Antonio Brown.
But the suspension for Smith-Schuster’s play has been widely criticized. Ben Roethlisberger said Wednesday the suspension was not fair because it equated what the rookie receiver did to what Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski did Sunday. Both are suspended for this week’s games, but Gronkowski’s hit came after the whistle while Smith-Schuster’s was on a football play.
No. 2 Oklahoma will bring three All-Americans to the College Football Playoff.
Quarterback Baker Mayfield, offensive tackle Orlando Brown and tight end Mark Andrews of Oklahoma were selected to the Associated Press All-America team, giving the Sooners more players on the first team than any school. The All-America team, which dates to 1925 and was selected this season by a panel of 17 Top 25 voters, was released Monday.
Wisconsin placed five players on the three teams, led by linebacker T.J. Edwards on the first team. Running back Jonathan Taylor and tight Troy Fumagalli made the second team and offensive linemen David Edwards and Beau Benzschawel made the third team.
Oklahoma had four picks overall with linebacker Ogbonnia Okoronkwo making the second team. Mayfield jumped from third team to first team. He was selected to the second team in 2015.
The Big Ten had the most All-Americans with seven, followed by the Big 12 with six and the Pac-12 and SEC with three apiece.
White, an NFL prospect, has had to carry the offensive load. The Hilltoppers have not been able run the football and struggled in pass protection.
Western Kentucky is last in the nation in rushing offense, averaging just 66.1 yards on the ground per game. The Hilltoppers also have allowed 42 sacks this season, the second-most of any bowl team. Only Washington State (44) has surrendered more sacks out of teams that reached bowls.
I would like to issue an apology to Josh McCown. Before the season, I said the only job he should have at age 38 is as a backup for a good team, and that he had no business starting. That was wrong: He has completed more than 67% of his passes for 17 touchdowns (both career bests) while throwing eight interceptions in 11 games. That’s totally serviceable! I’d take McCown over Joe Flacco any day.
“Guys make a lot of personal sacrifice. Guys play their guts out on both sides when those two teams come together.”
Before hosting the Patriots (10-2) for a Week 15 clash that could determine home-field in the AFC playoff picture, the Steelers (10-2) will focus on another AFC North showdown against the Ravens (7-5) at 8:30 p.m. ET Sunday.
However, while it may not be surprising that some NFL fans likely don’t even know Ngakoue’s name, at this point it’s damn-near disrespectful.
When we talk about the top young pass rushers in the league, it’s certainly fine to point out guys like Vic Beasley and Joey Bosa, but Ngakoue should be in that conversation as well. As a third-round pick there is no doubt that Ngakoue was a steal in the 2016 draft. All he has done since coming into the league is go about the business of kicking ass and getting sacks.
Magic head coach Frank Vogel surely wasn’t happy about the disparity at the free throw line, where the Hawks made 18 of 25 to his team’s 7 of 8. “No comment,” he said. “Look, we played hard and played the right way. I’m proud of the effort.”
“Our students, our fans, we have to go to this game. We have to,” Middle Tennessee State coach Rick Stockstill said.
“We’ve said now for two years, ‘It’s too hard to get to the Bahamas. It’s too hard to get to Hawaii. It’s hard.’ And I understand that. But now we’re four hours away. It’s on a perfect date. It’s on a Saturday.”
The Blue Raiders were the only Conference USA team to face three Power Five opponents this season. They were one of only two teams from the conference to secure a win against a Power Five team when they upset Syracuse 30-23 on Sept. 2.
Thanks to two of the most talented, new-generation centers along with talented newcomers, the Philadelphia 76ers and Minnesota Timberwolves had high hopes entering this season.
December is not going the way either team expected as the 76ers travel to face the Timberwolves on Tuesday.
When Miami center Kelly Olynyk got into foul trouble, Adebayo stepped up. Adebayo, a rookie out of Kentucky, was 5 for 6 from the field and also contributed four rebounds and two blocked shots.
Smith is down to Hill, Kelce, and young players he has zero chemistry with. This matters for Smith, who has a limited skill set. He needs to play with confidence in his receiving targets and throw in rhythm. He’s not Tom Brady, who can insert anyone at receiver and have success.
Victor Rask scored for Carolina on a loose puck with 2:40 to play. The Canes couldn’t get an equalizer past Gibson, who made several big saves down the stretch, including a stunning dive to stop Elias Lindholm.
“I didn’t want him to get a shot off, so I did a poke check and it was a second too early and it went in, but he’s a hell of a player with a hell of a shot, so I just wanted to take that away,” Lehner said. “I felt like I had him most of the game and it’s tough.”
It was Tarasenko’s second goal in his last nine games.
Mara would not dislose any decision regarding Manning’s status for Sunday’s game against the Cowboys, but did assert that Steve Spagnuolo will make that choice as interim coach. Spagnuolo will be a candidate for the job on an indefinite basis, as will interim GM Kevin Abrams as former GM Ernie Accorsi helps the team search for a permanent manager.
Atlanta missed six shots and committed two turnovers during that stretch before Schroder’s layup with 9:53 left.
Rodrigues scored on a power play early in the third. Rodrigues was left unmarked at the side of the net when an Evander Kane pass deflected off of Sam Reinhart directly to his tape.
It appeared as if he needed a quarter or so to get used to throwing with that swollen hand. Once he did, he made the throws he made a year ago when his poise and leadership weren’t widely in doubt.
Again, it looked for more than two quarters like the football gods giving the Cowboys offense a hand. From then on, though, it was simply the Cowboys figuring out that Elliott’s absence didn’t kill their season.
Although Bashaud Breeland returned an interception of Kellen Clemens’ pass 96 yards for a touchdown with 2:36 to play, Washington’s defense had few answers while the Chargers racked up 429 yards by midway through the third quarter.
Sharks forward Jannik Hansen appeared in his 600th NHL game. … Burns has six points in his last three games, including three goals. … Murphy scored his first goal in 69 games. … Staal had his second multi-goal effort in five games. … Zucker has points in eight of his last nine games.
In the college ranks, Northeastern winger Dylan Sikura is one of the most productive players in the country, and he has a shot at making Canada’s Olympic team. There also are some NCAA defensemen of particular intrigue, including Boston University’s Chad Krys and Sikura’s Northeastern teammate Ryan Shea, but Denver’s Ian Mitchell might have the best pro upside of the bunch.
It took longer than three months for Elliott to begin his suspension, which isn’t nearly as long as Deflategate lasted. There’s clearly a big difference between domestic violence and deflating footballs, but both dealt with labor law matters.
“We’re grateful for the immediate response by stadium security personnel to the situation,” the team said in a statement. “The Jacksonville Jaguars and our stadium partners are firmly committed to creating a safe and enjoyable experience for all who visit EverBank Field, including fans and members of the visiting team. It is unfortunate that the actions of a few would tarnish the reputation of the Jaguars fan base and the positive, electric game day atmosphere at yesterday’s game.”
“The defense is playing well, keeping us in games and especially some second half of games. We just haven’t been able to move the ball, not been able to get first downs, not being able to get completion and it’s frustrating,” Manning said (via the New York Daily News). “It’s not the style of football I’m used to playing. Not being able to complete the ball, so yeah it’s frustrating.
“We were talking about the style not being efficient, not being explosive. But it is a different style and it is a little bit more run, run and then throw it on third down. So yeah it’s different, but hey, it can be effective, it can work…we still got to do our part and finish that job and convert on those third downs.”
The Giants (2-9) are averaging only 15.6 points per game this season, ahead of only the Browns (15.0) at the bottom of the NFL scoring column.
Well, if the science backs Billups’ claim that marijuana is a stress reliever and then improves players’ performance and focus, then that would open up a whole different discussion between the and the Players Association on the pot policy. You say it’s impossible for a backup quarterback with two starts under his belt to take the next step, but Garoppolo isn’t your typical second-stringer.If one or both are on the board and they blow this pick on Brockers, Ingram or some other flavor of the month that is not a high priority, and defensive tackle is not a high priority, then the whole front office should be fired.Ravens quarterback Schaub continues to struggle with interceptions returned for touchdowns, adding another pick-six to his career totals ‘s game against the Miami Dolphins.Their paths crossed directly for the last time when they were introduced before the 1999 All- Game at Fenway Park as two of the 100 greatest baseball players of the 20th century.Berube is set to be a restricted free agent, RFA, after this .The DVVA team was three players short.
“Everything happens for a reason,” Gabbert told reporters this week. “I’m a firm believer in that, and it didn’t work out there. There were things in my control, some things out of my control, but for whatever reason, it just didn’t work. I wouldn’t change it at all. I learned a lot, met a lot of great people there.”
His matchup against the Jacksonville defense may not go as smoothly as his solid showing against the Texans in Week 11, though. The Jaguars are 7-3 on the back of a dominant defense that is No. 1 in the NFL in points allowed, yards allowed, passing yards allowed, and turnovers forced.
The team has won four straight in spite of Bortles — a fourth-year quarterback who has been turnover prone throughout his career and looks like a long shot to be the Jaguars’ starter in 2018.
No matter what I say, you’re going to pick the star you feel most comfortable with for tonight’s slate (for me, it’s Giannis Antetokounmpo), so allow me to save you some of your bankroll with a strong value play. Rostering Smith is never going to inspire great confidence, but he’s averaging over 33 minutes per game in November and that puts him in a great position to reach value against the fifth least efficient defense in basketball.
Smith’s resume indicates that there is plenty of scoring potential, but I’m encouraged by the versatility he has shown this month. He has eight rebounds-plus-assists in three of his last four games and has multiple thefts in three of his last five games.
They held on to beat an injury-depleted Seahawks team Monday, but we still don’t know how good these Falcons are.
About that 12th man … the Seahawks’ air of invincibility at CenturyLink Field is gone.
As they did all last season, the Lions are skating by with close victories. They’ll have to put together a complete game Thursday to beat the Vikings.
It was my first home playoff game as an owner and just the second home playoff game in our history. It will always be remembered for the fog that filled Foxboro Stadium that day. Yet, on the first play from scrimmage, Drew Bledsoe threw a deep pass that disappeared in the fog and reappeared 53 yards downfield in Terry Glenn’s hands. We scored on the next play and ended up winning 28-3. Our thoughts and prayers are with Terry’s family, his former teammates and friends who mourn his loss.”
Baseball Hall of Fame voters grappling with issues involving performance-enhancing drugs received an email advisory Tuesday from an unexpected source.
This doesn’t mean Hundley should become a high-volume runner; he doesn’t need to be with the emergence of Jones. It’s about using his mobility to get him off the spot to make him a more dangerous passer, showing why he was drafted to play behind Rodgers in the first place.
This might be the biggest thing. The Packers need Hundley to be a confident playmaker, not a cautious caretaker, given their persistent defensive issues. With an attack mentality, there will be more of the mental and physical miscues Rodgers rarely makes.
Hundley’s performances against the Vikings and Saints could have rattled him, so it’s a good sign that he’s looking at those rough games as an opportunity come back stronger.
“Just trying to get out ahead of him as much as possible, I think, is key,” George said. “That way, when he’s making plays in full court, I’m already in position, ready to receive the ball instead of catching up, getting my feet ready, trying to decide what to do. I’m ready to shoot or attack at that point.”
Westbrook, who enjoyed as great a solo campaign as any player in NBA history last season, got a glimpse of life as the only show in town and the first-round playoff exit that came with it. There’s a shot at a second chance for Westbrook to rekindle the spirit of the team the Thunder once had, and in the process shed any notions that fellow stars should shy away from sharing the court with OKC’s stubborn point guard.
The first month of the season has been a bumpy, stumbling, inconsistent 7-9 start, but there’s still hope for something close to that magical Westbrook-Durant combination that captivated the city for eight years.
